Welcome to historic New Bern celebrating 300 years...
Founded in 1710 by the Swiss, New Bern is located at the confluence of the Trent and Neuse Rivers in eastern NorthCarolina. Rich in history, it is the home of Tryon Palace, the Colonial Capitol and first State Capitol of North Carolina. Rich in Civil War history, New Bern served as a pivotal port city during the Civil War. In 1896, the Council of Burgess of Bern presented the armorial bearings and the colors of Bern, Switzerland, to the City symbolizing the strong bond of friendship.
Due to a revitalization effort that began in 1979, led by a private nonprofit known as Swiss Bear, the heart of this beautiful city is now a major attraction. Downtown offers a number of museums, shops, art galleries, cafes, restaurants, historic attractions, a range of cultural activities, waterfront hotels, B&B accommodations, parks, marina's, historic homes and churches, and a beautiful waterfront convention center. Swiss Bear sponsors MUMFEST, an annual event that attracts 80,000+ visitors to the downtown waterfront.
Aggressive revitalization, in partnership with the City and County governments and area organizations, planned overall growth and many special events enhance downtown’s charm. New Bern has, for many good reasons, won national acclaim for all it has to offer visitors, residents, and retirees.
